Science for the Win!  Serving as an expert witness in the multistate trial against META

META recently settled a large multistate lawsuit brought by the Attorneys General of 33 states.  The trial in Nashville TN was pivotal to getting META to agree to a settlement that included not only $18 billion dollars but also enforced changes to both Facebook and Instagram.  Dr. Melissa Hunt, of the Department of Psychology, served as a key expert witness for the plaintiffs and was instrumental in making the case for the states.  In this talk she will share her experiences and will cover her own research on the harms of social media, her review of META’s internal research for the trial, and the ways in which psychological science and clinical expertise helped overcome META’s defensive arguments.
